HMS Scylla, a Leander class Frigate was sunk in Whitsand Bay to the West of Plymouth on Saturday 27 March 2004. The project was managed by the National Marine Aquarium, based in Plymouth, to provide Europe's first artifical reef and to supplement recreational diving facilities around Plymouth. Click here to see Scylla's web site. (Some of the links on the site don't work).
Simon, Fiona, John & Christine were up early on the Saturday to watch Scylla's final voyage from Devonport to Whitsand Bay, followed by the scuttling operation.
Scylla is now lying on the seabed just to the west of the James Egan Layne with a 20degree list to port. The ban on recreational diving was lifted at 12:00 on Monday 29 March.
Here are some pictures grabbed from Simon's video of the day. Click on the image for a larger version..
